Recently Facebook changed it's to Meta. As per Facebook it was because they were shifting their focus from social networking apps to Mark Zuckerberg's dream of building the metaverse.
There are plenty of reasons to be critical move. And it is more likely that the Facebook's version of Metaverse is already failed before it even kicked in. The most common being that the company is simply trying to deflect some attention away from the latest round of controversies confronting the company.
It's not so good at making hardware -
Meta, has never been a best company when it comes to making the hardware. To consider the example of Oculus, a company that manufactures VR headset. After Meta acquired the company, there hasn't been much progress what so ever at the production part, neither there has been much sales of the Oculus VR Headset.
Neither good at making software -
The Meta, is also not so very good in making the softwares. When we compare the Messenger app with any other video calling app, like Facetime, or Zoom, the data of Facebook's Messenger App is really low.
Moderating content is too horrible -
Even Zuckerberg himself admits that eliminating hate speech and misinformation is just too difficult to expect Facebook to be good at it. What Facebook is good at is creating addictive social engineering tools that keep people engaged so that the company's apps can track your activity and show you more ads. It is very good at recommendation engines and algorithms designed to show you content that keeps you engaged.
User experience keeps getting worst -
It's not about the types of content you might be exposed to on Facebook. It's about the ways the company keeps changing it's apps to make it harder to do the things you really want to do. Everything is just happening just like Facebook wants you to do so.
Why Facebook's or later Meta's version of Metaverse will not work?
The better metaverse should consists of these core principles
- The metaverse is open, not closed, meaning, one should not be limited to use only one system. The more our digital worlds are cross-platform and inclusive to everyone interested in experiencing them, the richer and more engaging they will be.

- The metaverse is an expansion of the physical world, not a retreat from it. It should actually promise the user to layer new meaning onto our shared physical existence than one that encourages us to play VR games inside a dark, enclosed room.
- The metaverse should connect people, not divide them. For an open and inclusive platform to work, it needs a strong community that draws people in and welcomes them — while actively resisting trolls and other bad actors trying to stir up dissension.
So, if we carefully look at the Meta as a company, one who is aware about the core principles of Facebook, later Meta, will not be part of the Metaverse provided by Meta. The fact that these principles are already missing from Meta, will not be available in the so called Metaverse by Facebook.
Because of the same reason, the Metaverse a version of Meta is already failed before it even kicked in.
